How to Get an EORI Number in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide

By CDS Declarations Team6 min read

What Is an EORI Number?

An Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number is a unique identifier issued by HMRC that is required for any business or individual trading goods internationally across UK borders.

Without an EORI number, your goods will be held at the UK border and you will be unable to clear them through customs.

Who Needs an EORI Number?

You need a UK EORI number if you:

  • Import goods into the UK from a non-UK country
  • Export goods from the UK to a non-UK country
  • Move goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Are a customs agent acting on behalf of importers or exporters

Note: Even if you use a customs broker to submit declarations on your behalf, you will still typically need your own EORI number as the importer or exporter of record.

Types of EORI Numbers

GB EORI: Used for importing and exporting between Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and the rest of the world.

XI EORI: Required for businesses moving goods between Northern Ireland and non-EU countries, or between Northern Ireland and Great Britain where certain rules apply.

How to Apply for a GB EORI Number

Step 1: Check if You Already Have One

Many businesses were automatically issued an EORI number after Brexit if they had previously traded with the EU. Check your records or contact HMRC.

Step 2: Gather Your Business Information

You will need:

  • Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number
  • Your VAT registration number (if applicable)
  • Your business address and contact details
  • Your SIC code (Standard Industrial Classification)

Step 3: Apply Online via HMRC

Apply through the HMRC website using your Government Gateway account. Most applications are approved within 5-7 working days, though straightforward cases can be processed faster.

Step 4: Keep Your EORI Number Safe

Once issued, your EORI number is linked to your business and does not expire. Keep it secure and ensure it is included on all import and export documentation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using an incorrect EORI format: GB EORI numbers are 12 digits and start with "GB" followed by your VAT number and a 3-digit suffix.
  • Forgetting to link your EORI to CDS: If you're declaring goods yourself, your EORI must be enrolled in the Customs Declaration Service.
  • Applying for the wrong type: Ensure you apply for GB, XI, or both depending on your trade flows.
